So I was talking to a girl today who has the propensity to make everyone her "friend", regardless of whether that's what they were hoping for or not. Don't get me wrong, she's a real sweetheart, but when you're in a position where you're looking to settle down, and yet every guy you come across you de-sex, finding a mate gets a little complicated. She was telling me about this one guy who had gone to her high school and who she randomly bumped in to a couple years ago. Friendly hellos were said, numbers exchanged, and they've been talking on and off since then.
Recently, they were both complaining about undue pressure from the family to get on with things and exchanging "OMG me too!" stories, when the guy asks what she would think of the two of them. Pause for a moment of dumbfounded, panic-laced silence.
My reaction was "DUUUUDE why NOT? Talk about a perfect set up!!!"
Hers: But we're just FRIEEENDDDS! I never thought of him that way
Me: well clearly he did
Her: oh he's just desperate
Me: LOL, ouch? Why do you say that?
Her: we were JUST friends
Me: you're being presumptuous. guys don't just randomly suggest marriage to the first girl they trip across just cos she's convenient
Her: well what else can it be then?
Me: Uhhh....he LIKES you? he's gotten to KNOW you and feels some potential?
Her: psssssh that's not possible
Me: you're an idiot
Her: I JUST NEVER THOUGHT OF HIM THAT WAY, i mean i can't just change how i see him, we've been friendly this whole time!
Me: and just how exactly do you hope to like someone then? the whole arranged chai-serving scenario doesn't work, and every other guy is a friend! :P
Her: hrrmmm...well...yeah...but
Me: no buts! take it as the compliment that it is and then objectively decide whether you're compatible...just cos you started as friends you are chickening out and backing up?? HELLOOO!
Her: i guessssss.....
And so where this left us was with the question as to whether or not a guy would be desperate enough to suggest such a thing to a girl just because he's known her a while. My theory is that no freaking way, only us stupid girls get blackmailed into settling for 40 year old widowers with 3 kids. Guys on the other hand have their pick of primped and perfected 18 year olds with artificially straightened hair and push-up bras. Unless they're really unfortunate in some way, but that's a different scenario. Primpy push-ups don't look at quasimodo's. I suppose that goes both ways, but we're talking about the other side right now :P Let's stay focused here.
What do you guys think? Interest or desperation?

I'd say its definitely interest on his side. He knows her likes/dislikes, is comfortable with her, and there is no guy on the planet who hasn't thought about what it would be like to be more than a friend with each of his female friends, unless they;re repulsive. All my guy friends at the office concur with this statement.
You've got a point...it's definitely worth exploring the options...being friends is a good start i would thnk!
but hmmm desperation or interest....could be either. We tend to think its only girls becharis who have a hard time finding the right guy....I've begun to realize, guys equally have a hard time. But yes, you're rght at least no one suggests that guys marry 40 year old divorced aunties with three kids,....whereas its consider perfectly normal to suggest that to a 20 something girl! :P grrrr
